per an ongoing conversation with colleagues on the origins of network science, curious that this is cited on wikipedia with research dating back to 1925 … I still hold a bias that most of the relevant work on real world networks (that display power-law distributions for instance) is more recent (i.e. coincident with the internet itself, and the focus on data in internet companies), save the hub of work in sociology in the 50s onward … the Erdos-Renyi random graph stuff seams foundational but unsure of the applicability to multi-graphs encompassing many types of vertices and edges.
